This is my favourite film of all time and I hope you will join us for this screening.
http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/1/9/0/event_271769072.jpegAfter a series of serious films (The Defiant Ones, On the Beach, Inherit the Wind, and Judgement at Nuremberg), Stanley Kramer decided to challenge himself to create the ultimate comedy movie. The film starts with Jimmy Durante passing on info about some hidden loot to four groups of people who come to his aid after a car accident. This information puts into motion a frantic race to see who will be first to find the cash. Along the way additional people find out about the hidden treasure and join the chase. If you are fan of fifty year-old vehicles and bad driving skills then this movie is for you.
The movie was filmed in Ultra Panavision 70 and presented in Cinerama with a soundtrack by Ernest Gold. The opening credits feature a four minute animated sequence by the famous graphic designer Saul Bass.
http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/e/5/c/event_271768252.jpegThis movie was very popular with audiences in 1963 and 1964 and it became the highest grossing movie of 1963. Due to the way some major films were present in the 1960s (a touring roadshow version first, followed by a later general release), there are various versions of the movie. The most common version runs about 2 hours and 35 minutes, but versions in excess of 3 hours have been shown on rare ocassions. I feel that the extra footage does not really add anything to the story and I like the shorter version better which is likely the version that Cineplex will be showing.
http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/8/1/0/8/event_271773032.jpegWe will meet at 12 noon on the 4th floor in the area between the theatre entrance and Jack Astor's (this is to the right of the entrance NOT left of the entrance where the ticket machines are). You can spot the organizer (Mark) by looking for someone with black hair, white jeans and a black shoulder bag with buttons on it. At 12:10pm we will head to the theatre and attempt to get a group of seats together. The movie starts at 12:30pm. Make sure to get your ticket on the main floor before heading up to the 4th floor to meet us - the ticket booth is at street level behind the escalators. As there might be a line for getting tickets you may want to take advantage of getting your tickets ahead of time - visit the "Classic Film Series" (http://www.cineplex.com/Events/ClassicFilmSeries) page at Cineplex.com to buy your tickets online or visit the Yonge & Dundas Cineplex anytime before September 8th to buy your ticket. Tickets for this movie are just $6 (there is no discount for seniors or students).
