Details

It's no surprise to anyone that mobile devices are the leaders in the growth of consumer electronics. (http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/18/us-consumerelectronics-idUSTRE76H2R820110718) Is your website prepared? How does your website look on an iPhone, Android phone, or BlackBerry? What about on the iPad, netbook, or Kindle?

While mobile devices are growing in popularity, we are also seeing desktop computers with larger and larger screens. The W3Schools website reports that in January 2011, 85% of visitors to their website were using a screen resolution higher than 1024x768 pixels. (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp) How does your website look to those visitors with increasingly larger monitors?

At the January 21st Web SIG Cleveland meeting, we will look at a method to address the needs of these design extremes with responsive web design (http://www.abookapart.com/products/responsive-web-design). Web designer Eric Browning will explore with us how to use CSS to create flexible grids, layouts, and images, and use media queries to be responsive to the varied needs of website visitors. The goal will be to explore a new web development paradigm and develop a new workflow that will better address today's web visitors' needs.

Eric Browning is a designer living and working just outside Akron, Ohio. He has worked for several interactive agencies and production houses, doing design and front end development, as well as freelance projects. He's now the Art Director at Blue Frog Gaming (http://bluefroggaming.com/company), a gaming startup, trying to create something fun and meaningful. He stays active in the local web and design communities, including leadership roles in the Akron Canton web group (https://www.meetup.com/akroncantonweb/members/9487467/). When not thinking about design and media, he's usually spending time with his wife and hiking with their crazy dog, Pica. He has a small personal site at www.fiveoclockfriday.com (http://www.fiveoclockfriday.com/) and you can reach him on Twitter at @browningeric (http://twitter.com/browningeric) as well.
