We Really Dig GIMP 101

Anyone that has spent any time designing websites understands the need for well designed graphics. From banners, branding and logos to photos, clip-art and backgrounds, the right images can set your site apart from others in the crowd. While excellent photography or stock images gives you a good start, you're always going to have to take it further. Images are going to need to be tweaked, photos will need correction, red-eye removal and so on. Your logos, banners and sliders will need to be integrated with other graphics to create just the vision you wish to portray.

To accomplish all of this means you need a professional graphics application. While many designers rely on Adobe Photoshop, over the last several years new versions of GIMP, The GNU Image Manipulation Program, have hit the scene like gangbusters. The GIMP team has pulled out all of the stops to create a program capable of your most intensive graphics requirements. From tweaking and cleaning up photos, creating images from stock, all the way to "painting" masterpieces, GIMP can do it now.

Starting in April, we will be running a new course entitled "We Really Dig GIMP 101!" This course will dig into the meat of GIMP and give you skills that normally only come by experience. We're going to be leap frogging students over all of the pitfalls they would normally face when setting up and running GIMP. This series was created specifically with the novice website user in mind. So we've designed the with a focus on the particular needs of novices running their own websites.

You are going to learn to Install and use GIMP to create and tweak the images for your website. You'll learn to create Banners, Logos, backgrounds, photos for inclusion in your blog and more. You will learn how to work with the GIMP Panels, follow The396 recommendations for using GIMP (which will speed you along in your GIMP use), use the GIMP toolset, and how to know which tool to use to best accomplish the final image you need. You will be taught extensive use of the GIMP Select tools and really everything we do here at The396 to get our job done on a daily basis.
