Road trip to Red Rocks?

If the weather doesn't look too promising we'll consider changing the meetup to Joshua Tree instead.

Proposed dates: Dec 26 through Jan 1 or 2

Camping $15 per night w/ max of 9 people per site. No reservations. First-come, first-served.

Recommended personal gear list:

warm sleeping bag (mummy bags in stuff sacks take up the least space)

sleeping pad (to insulate you from the cold ground)

down jacket

harness

helmet (mandatory.  I have extras if anybody needs one)

climbing shoes WITH small LOCKING BINER (so you they don't fall off on the trail - it happens)

sunglasses

sun cap

lip balm

plate, bowl, insulated cup, utensils

Shared gear:

tent

campstove (1 for every two people should be enough)

camp fuel

water cooler (try to minimize food that needs to keep cold)

BBQ and propane (I am thinking of bringing mine if there is room)

lantern

Additional personal gear if you plan on doing multipitch climbs:

NO cotton clothes. Only synthetics.

helmet

headlamp with fresh batteries (recommend a second headlamp too, it's hard to install new batteries in the dark and a second headlamp weighs next to nothing), and remember you will probably be using up your batteries around the campsite so want an extra set for just climbing

camelbak (to carry rain jacket, headlamp, water, food, hat, etc. on the climb)

rain jacket (absolutely necessary for multipitch climbs, sudden snow and rain storms are a reality at Red Rocks)

fleece hat

fleece gloves

warm jacket (fleece or synthetic down) emergency blanket 2 prussiks nut tool daisy chain or runner with small locking biner

compact knife

shared for multipitch:

rope

bail webbing and rap rings

first aid kit w lighter

TP

topos

compass

walkie talkies (I will probably bring mine)

Got a small taste of Red Rock before breaking my foot on descent. I should be all healed in time to go back for more in the Spring!

I'm looking into showers and hottub so stay tuned.

Yep, I've been watching it carefully every day. Looks like we are going to get there just as it starts to warm up. Will still be chilly at night, but I'll take it. Let's pray for no wind now.

Temperature seems to be warming up for next week! http://www.climbingweather.com/Nevada/Red-Rocks :^))))

Not sure when we will be leaving on the 26th, but I can call you to give you an ETA once we are on the road.
I think Patrick and I are going to try to hitch a ride with Lindsey. We can probably meet up with you on the way and one of us can drive with you.
Rob and Kenita are going to head up separately from So. CA. I think.

what time is everyone thinking of arriving on the 26th? I'll be driving on my own from near Bakersfield.

Just got back from Red Rocks. Friday/Saturday were gorgeous days. However, the rock was freezing in the shade. I highly recommend staying on routes that are in the sun. Sunday it was raining and even snowed at the higher elevations. Keep an eye on the weather. climbingweather.com does a pretty good job of giving you weather updates. Also, you can call Red Rocks Climbing Center and ask them.

So far the weather seems to be staying dry. It's just a few degrees warmer in JTree, but the temps are at least staying above 50 in the daytime. Pray for a warmspell next week.

I only use a gri-gri on a big wall or to belay a hang dogger. Parallel routes would be ideal if you can find two routes side by side that'll work.

Isn't what a gri-gri is for? 8^) The best is two parties climbing parallel routes so that they can take photos of each other. How's that as a plan?

    December 15, 2011

  • Stan H

I never forget to bring my camera, but my partner is going to be learning how to lead belay so dont want her trying to take pictures at the same time.

I have an extra tent if someone needs one. Stan, there is a big piece missing of your list: don't forget your camera! ;^)

Hey Brooke-- I would have been down to meet beforehand, but I'm leaving town tomorrow & won't be back until the day before driving to Red Rocks, so not enough time on my end!

    Thanks Rob.

Let me know if there is a place for me, Stan. I'll be back the 25th afterall, and can drive from the bay area any time on the 26th & come back on the 1st, but I am flexible. I think my car will fit at least three, or four depending on how we pack.

    December 13, 2011

  • Stan H

So if you still want to go you need to respond to my emails.

    December 12, 2011

  • Stan H

I have sent out emails requesting everyone to contact me. So far only Brooke and Katie have done so.
Weather permitting I still want to go, but need to know everybody's experience and knowledge, expectations (Top-rope, sport, trad), who can drive, when you can leave, when you need to return, how many people you can fit in your car, etc etc etc.
And then we need to coordinate food, cooking utensils, tents, climbing gear, and an overall itinerary for the week.

    December 12, 2011

  • Hulagirl

    Is this a go?

    December 12, 2011

  • Brooke

Are you guys interested in meeting face to face before we all go down?

    1 · December 10, 2011

  • Brooke

I'm planning to camp Katie, but if you're in need of a "tent roommate" I have a big tent.

    December 6, 2011

  • Stan H

Shannon: I assume you are referring to campsite parking. If I remember correctly campsites have 2 parking spots and can have up to 9people. I think we parked one car at someone elses site. We could park an extra vehicle outside tge park if necessary.

    November 28, 2011

  • Shannon

I can't be there for the full week so I'll drive on my own. I'm happy to take people in my car but you'll have to find your own way back to the Bay Area. I need to leave Red Rocks by Friday morning and drive to Thousand Oaks. Stan: Is there a car limit?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
