New Meetup: Cataract Trail change of pace scramble

Announcing a new Meetup for Climb On!

What: Cataract Trail change of pace scramble

When: Sunday, October 24,[masked]:00 AM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

The Cataract Trail between Fairfax and Bolinas in Marin County climbs alongside a huge cataract with waterfalls all the way up. The water is low this time of year and hiking up the cataract instead of the trail makes for a fun scramble to the top with just a few tricky spots (with easy alternate routes). There are lots of rules, but from what I can tell you just can't get in the water. See the signs in the photo album and judge for yourself -

A nice map:

At the top, it's back to the trail to hike to Laurel Dell picnic area. I think you can park near the picnic area if you want to leave straight away, but I'm planning to bring a nice lunch and then do some more hiking after. I'll also check if there's anything fun to do in Fairfax or Bolinas at the end of the day too.

I usually drive out through San Rafael to Fairfax, then up FairFax-Bolinas road, drive over the dam, then park at the first big right-hand switchback in the road with all the warning signs. We can meet there. You can also come from the south up Panoramic Highway to Pan Toll Road, then left on Ridgecrest and right on Fairfax-Bolinas Road, then all the way down the hill.

Parking can be very limited if it happens to be busy, but it rarely is. I can drive up to three people from the east bay.
