CSS development using live coding in Clojure by Oliver Mooney

Modern CSS development uses tools like Less, Sass, or PostCSS preprocessors to succinctly express CSS and hide browser differences. Using Garden, a Clojure & Clojurescript CSS library, we can use the full power of Clojure to create and combine CSS declarations. When combined with Bruce Haumann’s DevCards, we get a great live-coding environment that lets us see how our CSS looks across multiple browsers simultaneously. This talk will go through setup and implementation of CSS for a blog website using Garden, how it compares to the same workflow using Less/Sass/PostCSS, and more. It will include a quick intro to CSS and its place in the web landscape for those without web development experience. The talk is aimed at Clojure newcomers, and at those with some CSS experience curious about Clojure, or Clojure experts unfamiliar with CSS, Garden or DevCards.

Speaker Profile: Oliver Mooney is the founder of GetBulb, a data visualisation startup based in Dublin's city centre. He coded the first version of the app (which you can try on http://www.getbulb.com (http://www.getbulb.com/)) in JavaScript, using the SproutCore framework, as used by Apple. The next version is being produced in ClojureScript. GetBulb has won several awards including the 2012 Irish Times Digital Challenge.
