6:30 pm: System Domination: Config Management and Image Deployment
by Richard Gooch (Symantec)
A number of tools have been developed which automate the work of configuration management and software deployment for fleets of computer systems. These tools build on top of the existing tools used for managing single systems, rather than taking a step back and designing a solution which is best suited for a large fleet of identical systems. As a result, these systems are complex to manage, have poor performance and are unreliable. They are appropriate for maintaining a fleet of Desktop machines (which are all beloved pets), but not for maintaining a (typically much larger) fleet of server machines (which should be considered cattle, and thus managed as herds).
This presentation describes the design of a robust, reliable and efficient architecture which can scale to the very largest herd. The design target is that a single system and administrator can manage at least 10,000 systems with negligible performance impact on the managed systems, fast response to global changes and nearly atomic changes on those systems. The software system that will implement this architecture is called the Dominator.
7:30 pm: Platform as a Service (Kubernetes/Mesos + OpenStack)
by Miguel Zuniga (Symantec)
OpenStack provides a really good and robust infrastructure as a service however doing Platform as a Service is the next challenge on the cloud architecture.
Apache Mesos is a highly available resource management software for datacenters which can run on top of any cloud, physical server or container.
Google Kubernetes is a cluster containter management system which allows you to control and deploy large clusters of containers.
Using any of them (separated or in conjunction), you can deploy a highly available Platform as a Service allowing our users to deploy highly available stacks within minutes.
Richard Gooch:
Richard Gooch is a Technical Director Symantec, where he is building a team to develop processes and tools for the building, testing, securing and deployment of system images, for both bare-metal machines as well as virtual machines. Richard joined Symantec from Google, where he built a similar team.
Miguel Zuniga:
Experienced technical lead, who during his past 10 years in the field has worked with physical, virtual and cloud technologies. He is a supporter of all open source projects and evangelist of using open source tools. Now is a member of the Symantec's Cloud Platform Engineering leading the Platform as a Service Platform. During his free time he enjoys reverse engineering how technologies work just for the fun of it. Some of his favorite past and ongoing projects include: Virtual HA Cluster using CentOS/RedHat Cluster Suite and VMware Server 1 (2006) Automated datacenter provisioning and deployment using open source tools (2010) Open source in-house S3 (2012) OpenEscalar cloud management framework (ongoing) Canister container management and provisioning (ongoing) His past work experience includes: Tech Lead at Electronic Arts Digital Platform Sr. Cloud Engineer at Rackspace Cloud Sites Sr. Linux Engineer at GlaxoSmithKline Sr. Linux Engineer at GE Corporate International Contracts
