Docker Docker Docker

Happy new years everyone!

For our January meetup, we will be talking about Docker- the Linux container engine.

If you've been trying to figure out what Docker is about, how to use it and where to use it, then this is the meetup for you. We'll be doing user presentations on what folks are currently doing with Docker in their projects (either personal or at work)!

Our speakers:

• James Turnbull (skype-in), Intro to Docker and The Docker Book

• Scott Collier to talk about docker files in fedora.

• Ian Richardson to talk about Docker+Rundeck.

• Nars Tadepali to talk about Docker usecases at Actian.

• Aater Suleman to talk about Docker usecases at Flux7.

• Paul Czarkowski to talk about Deis.

If you are already using Docker on your personal project or at work? Then we'd love to hear what you are doing with it- consider presenting your usecase or how you are using Docker. Just comment on this thread, and we'll add you to the speaker list.

We are using docker in Flux7 Labs (flux7.com) for while. We have used Docker in three cases (and many to come). One is the more common use case of dev environment -> deploy flow. Second is a very unique use case where we have used Docker to build isolated multi-tenancy in an existing application with minimal code changes. Third, we are benchmarking Docker containers vs. VMs for a large scale project. I would like to talk about one or two of these use cases if time permits. Let me know if this is of interest.

    March meeting on the 8th

Is anyone willing to carpool up and back from central Austin? (My bride needs our car tomorrow night too.) Maybe this is time for a Zipcar rental? Does Racksace have a Zipcar lot where I can leave the car without getting charged? (And take the risk it isn't there when the meeting is over.)

    Anon,
    Andrew

      Where are you coming from?

      January 21, 2014

    • Shaun M.

Or need to be picked up?

      January 21, 2014

  • Nick S.

Andrew, Rackspace doesn't have Zipcar slots. But there is plenty of off-street, no-cost commercial lot parking. Attendees shouldn't have an issue finding parking.

The meetup is tomorrow. This is going to be our largest meetup to date, so get ready! Also, James Turnbull from Docker will be skyping with us to give us a overview of Docker to kickoff the meeting!

If you aren't able to attend the meeting tomorrow, please RSVP 'No' to the invite so that folks on the waitlist will be able to attend!

    See y'all tomorrow.

    January 20, 2014

  • Jebarson K.

So how does the waiting list work ? do we show up tomm and see if there is space?

    1 · January 20, 2014

    • Karthik

I'll be releasing wait list folks->yes in a little bit. We're going to have a crowd, so it will be a tight squeeze. However, it's better to error on the side of "super full meetup" rather than "I wasn't allowed to attend".

I just completed the level 2 docker tutorial and I requested notification when new levels become available: https://www.docker.io/learn/dockerfile/level2/

    January 20, 2014

  • Karthik

Folks, we're at capacity. If you won't be able to make the meetup, please decline the invite so that someone else on the waitlist can attend please.

  • Scott C.

If anyone wants to toy around with Docker on Fedora before the meeting, I have a few dockerfiles based on Fedora: http://www.colliernotes.com/2014/01/where-are-my-dockerfiles.html Examples Include: MySQL, nginx, PostgreSQL, CouchDB, Apache, memcached, MongoDB, rabbitmq, ssh and Wordpress.

    January 11, 2014

    • Karthik

Hi scott, why don't you present what you have to the group? Let me know, and I can add you to the list of folks presenting.

      January 13, 2014

    • Scott C.

Hey Karthik, That sounds good. I can go over dockerfile basics for 20 minutes or so.

      January 14, 2014

  • Aater S.

Are all the talks Docker use cases or is anyone going over the basic concepts of LXC containers, the purpose and docker, and a 5 minute tutorial?

    January 13, 2014

  • Dustin K.

This is great timing! Canonical is sponsoring the pizza for the meetup. Docker.io packages just landed in the Ubuntu Trusty (14.04) archive. It's currently 0.6.7 (which is a bit older), but we're targeting the 1.0 release for the Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS release.
