From cocos2d.org: Cocos2d is [an open source] framework for building 2D games, demos, and other graphical/interactive applications.

There are many flavors of Cocos2d. Originally written in Python the framework is in the process of being ported to Objective-C, C++, Java, and JavaScript. Coco2d enables you to quickly design and develop high quality 2d games that run on Mac OS X, Windows, iOS, Android, and modern web browsers.

The Objective-C version, Cocos2d-iPhone is one of the most complete and robust implementations. It has recently been extended to support the iPad and Mac OS X as well.

What I love about Cocos2d is that you get to professional results with low cost or free tools and very low complexity. There is a very strong developer community supporting Cocos2d and several tutorial books have been published.

The basic concepts in the Cocos2d architecture, implemented as classes, provide all the building blocks that a sophisticated game needs: Scenes, layers, sprites, animations, actions, sequences, menus, particles, sound, and physics models.

If you've tried your hand at writing Flash or Java-based games you'll be able to jump right into Cocos2d. If you're already using Cocos2d to write a great game this group will be a great place to share tips and techniques and show off your ideas.
