Speaker Bios & Abstracts
Ivan Tse, Mobile App Development for Rails
Abstract:
Mobile platforms are ubiquitous and diverse. You know you’ve got to build your site so it works well for every smart phone and tablet on the planet. Or do you? I’ll talk to you about my successes (and some failures) and how to go about building a rockin’ mobile- ready site.
Bio:
Ivan hacked into existence m.bebo.com (http://m.bebo.com/) and Bebo's SMS platform. He was also the geekboy behind mycharitywater.org (http://mycharitywater.org/) and various projects at Digital Chocolate, Tuenti, and Monkey Inferno. He is currently a migrant coder, occasionally found office crashing at various startups. He also thinks motorcycles are pretty darned cool.
Brian Morearty, CoffeeScript for Rubyists
Abstract:
Is CoffeeScript really so great? Why use it instead of good ol' JavaScript? Which of my favorite syntax goodies does it steal from Ruby? It looks Pythony with all that significant whitespace. How can I use it in my pre-Rails-3.1 project? How do I convert my legacy JavaScript? Why is Internet Explorer no good at exploring the Internet? Brian Morearty answers most of these questions. He's a Ruby aficionado who has used CoffeeScript for his client-side coding for a few months. In this talk he does a quick demo of how to install CoffeeScript, convert your JavaScript to CoffeeScript, and include it in a pre-Rails-3.1 application. But most of the talk is on details of the language, including stuff it stole from Ruby that make it just plain fun for a Rubyist to program in CoffeeScript. He even covers one thing that is gasp better than Ruby.
Bio:
Brian Morearty writes web apps in Rails, is co-founding a startup that serves the Court Reporting industry, consults to software companies, and teaches Rails development. He has been writing software since the early 80s and is the former Lead UI Engineer on QuickBooks. He was happy when the CoffeeScript-in-Rails controversy superseded the controversy about his ”Object.in?” method being added to ActiveSupport.
Andy Cutright, Facebook Application Tips & Tricks / Developing for the Open Graph Beta
Abstract:
Facebook has opened the Open Graph Beta for development. There are a lot of corners to explore and the platform is buggy. We’ll demonstrate the basics of Actions and Objects, what you can and can’t do with them. We’ll work through configuring Actions, Objects, and the OG beta application itself and what you need in order to be ready when Facebook enables the Timeline.
Bio:
Andy is a seasoned software engineer and team manager. He worked extensively on enterprise systems at Borland, and most recently climbed the ranks at Bebo to become Director of Engineering. His teams have tackled tough problems like fighting spam and enhancing heavily trafficked website scalability and reliability.
