"Technical Interviews" with CodeNewbie DC: Talks, Dinner, Games, and Community

Details

Join us for another CodeNewbie DC event! This evening's theme is "Technical Interviews". You've heard of the dreaded technical interview - come join us to ease your fears and learn how to conquer them.

We'll have speakers giving both technical and non-technical talks (don't worry, they'll all be newbie-friendly) and, afterwards, we'll play board games. Come out for great food, code, and community.

What I Look For in a Junior Developer: While there are certain questions you can expect to answer at most interviews for coding jobs, you might not always know the best way to answer. Ross Kaffenberger will offer his perspective as a hiring tech lead on what he is really trying to find out when he is interviewing you.

Ross Kaffenberger is a former teacher who loves Ruby, JavaScript, and building stuff for the web. Though he's been coding professionally for the past ten years, he still thinks of himself as a CodeNewbie. Most recently, I've been the Head of Engineering at Devpost, based in New York City.

A Case Study of the Technical Interview: Kim and David are going to role-play through a technical interview problem we have used in dozens of real-world interviews. With Kim as the interviewer and Dave as the interviewee, we'll demonstrate what a practical, non-whiteboard, non-algorithm-trivia interview looks like.

David Bock is the Director of Engineering - Special Projects at Livingsocial, and the Executive director of LoudounCodes, a non-profit providing extracurricular and supplemental com-sci curriculum to Loudoun's K-12 students.

Kim MacCormack is the Director of Engineering for LivingSocial's New Initiatives applications, and former Founder of CodeSherpas Inc., with a Master’s in Software Engineering and over 20 years of software engineering and technical management experience.

All skill levels, languages, and experience are welcome, from total newbies to senior devs. All you need is an interest in code and community.

I'm so excited to see you on Tuesday! And special thank you to WeddingWire (https://www.weddingwire.com/corp/about-us) for hosting.

Transportation/Parking Info
You can take the red line to Friendship Heights and get off on the exit labelled "Chevy Chase Metro Building". WeddingWire is located on the third floor. Please see email I will send on Tuesday for my phone number if you aren't able to locate the office. The building itself is a bus terminal, so any bus that terminates at Friendship Heights will likely drop off on the ground floor of the Chevy Chase Metro Building. There are also numerous parking decks in the area. Click here to check them out (http://en.parkopedia.com/parking/locations/2_wisconsin_circle_chevy_chase_md_united_states_dqcjtuspd86/?country=us&arriving=201611291830&leaving=201611292230).
