Monthly Meetup - Denver Bitcoin Society Noah Berger: The Backpage Effect

The “backpage effect” is what happens when people are compelled to start using Bitcoin because their livelihood depends on Backpage.com, a website similar to Craigslist but which caters much more to the adult industry. Since Backpage started in 2004, they have fought constantly with credit card processing companies who simply don’t like the content backpage allows. As Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are permissionless by their very nature, no one can be disallowed from using them in whatever way they choose. So when VISA and Mastercard cut off payments to Backpage last July, bitcoin became the only way to purchase advertisements on the site.

This meetup, I have the pleasure of inviting Noah Berger to speak to the group. A longtime member of the Bitcoin Society, his business opened the very first Bitcoin ATM in Colorado in July of 2014. Fast-forward to today - XBTeller has expanded to 6 ATMs spread out over the front range. His business is thus front and center in onboarding new bitcoin users impacted by the backpage effect, and we’re excited to have him talk a little bit about what that’s been like, as well as sharing some general insights into the bitcoin ATM business.
