Cassandra Disk Drive Performance Benchmarks at Gnip and Cassandra v2.0

  • Oct 30, 2013 · 6:30 PM

Nick Matheson, Software Engineer at Gnip, and his team are currently running benchmark tests with Cassandra on different classes of disk drives. These benchmarks will help them better understand maximum read/write performance and the different drive options that exist in the market. Nick will be presenting on what they've uncovered so far.

Michael Shaler, Business Development at DataStax, will be giving an introduction to some of the new features in the latest v2.0 release of Cassandra. Come by and learn about the exciting work the Cassandra dev team has been doing in v2.0 such as:

• Lightweight Transactions (Compare and Swap)

• Eager Retries

• Improved Compaction

• Triggers (experimental)

• CQL Cursors

Food and beverage will be served; we hope you're able to make it!

It was good. Excellent speakers. I wish the second talk had started on time, though.

Thanks, Nick! I really enjoyed this and the discussions we had afterwards while listening to Greg and Anne DJ'ing :) I was expecting to ask more questions about types of drives used, short-stroking to reduce seek times, etc., but I think the broad take-away of this was the significance of SSDs and that we should all be watching ioFusion's PCIe flash storage cards in the future. It's always nice to see and appreciate someone else's hard work. Cheers

Thanks for the interesting topics and good discussion. Nick, while your conclusions validated common sense, I appreciate you did the leg work and shared the data. Michael, it is always good to hear you speak.
