RE: [witches-1258] Sioux Nation emergency

Thanks for the up date. There is a organization here in town that take trucks loaded with donated goods up to the Rosebud and the Pine Ridge Sioux reservations regularly. That would be the easiest way to donate. They are off of N. Nevada - 45 A Commerce St.
Here is their website.   This organization is legitimate.

Please excuse me if you're receiving this for a second time, but I want to make sure everyone gets this message:
Today was the day I was going to be leaving for the Sioux Nation, but I have been unable to make contact with them to verify what -- if anything -- they need from us.  I've tried the phone number listed on the Tribe's official website (no answer and no message machine).  I've tried e-mailing members of the Tribal council and haven't yet received a reply.
My guess is that they've been so inundated with offers of help that their staff and infrastructure have been overwhelmed.
After having fallen (to my acute embarrassment) for the scam that was being perpetrated to profit from this disaster, I am loath to go driving up there without a clear understanding of whether or not they even want coats and blankets, etc. from us.  I had hoped to get a street address, at least, so I could gather up what has been collected and ground ship it via UPS up to the Nation.  But I don't have that.  And I don't want to send it to a P.O. box because who knows what kind of ability they have to get our boxes from the post office to the recipients.  My feeling is that if I can't get a street address for the Nation headquarters office so I can have it shipped direct via UPS, I shouldn't send at all.
So, if you've collected coats, etc., I guess the best thing is to give them to a local non-profit.  I spoke with the Administrative Office, and the Marion House would gladly accept donations of clean used coats, jackets, blankets, etc. for distribution FREE OF CHARGE to Colorado Springs' cold homeless people.  If you have coats, etc. to donate, you can take them to the Marion House, 14 West Bijou Street to the loading dock on the west side of the building.  They accept donations from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
If you'd like to make a cash donation to the Sioux, here's information about a successful experience one of our members had.  (I think I forwarded her e-mail earlier, but just in case, I'm pasting it here.)
"I donated via this link on the MSNBC website-  By the way, their original goal was to raise $35,000 by the end of the month. After Keith Olbermann reported on the disaster on his broadcast Tuesday, over $244,000 has been donated!!"
Again, please accept my apologies for falling for the earlier scam, and brightest blessings on all of you who have collected coats, etc.!  I repeat my promise:  I will never, ever forward a plea like the one I did without first investigating it for myself.  That's a rule I generally follow, but didn't in this case because the info came from a trusted source.  (I still trust the source; she had also received it from someone she trusted.)  But I should know better by now -- and I promise I've learned my lesson.  No appeals without first verifying the info myself firsthand.

The emergency is that Sioux elders are freezing to death.  (There's a complete description of the situation pasted below.)  I'm going up there the week of Feb. 22 to take blankets and clean, wearable, non-tattered used coats, jackets, sweaters, and other warm clothes. I'll also be visiting the LaCreek Utility to make sure money goes into the right accounts for propane. If you'd like to contribute items or money, please send an e-mail to [address removed]  Thanks!

This email was sent to me today by Grandmother Celinda who knows these families the power and beauty of their tradition and their hardships.
At the very end of following video link , Keith Oberman is describing the negligence of the Indian Affairs Committee in responding to this disaster. It may be up to us to step in and help.[masked]

If you know people or organizations who might be interested to help support, kindly send this message on.

A State of Emergency has been declared on the Pine Ridge Lakota "Sioux"
Indian Reservation. People have died. Many more people are at risk of
freezing to death. Another cold front is coming in, yet where is the
national media coverage?

Does the 'Lacreek Electric Company' - a non-Indian utility often thought
to be prejudice, care that people are suffering, since they are pulling
meters every day? (which is illegal throughout the rest of the u.s. during
the winter months).

What will Obama and the federal government do about this? While they dig
out Haitians, indigenous people right here may freeze to death. What are
we going to do about it?

Help put this message out for help. The children and families of the Pine
Ridge Indian Reservation need our help now. It is urgent that all 40,000
residents of the Oglala Nation have electricity and propane.

Call LaCreek toll free at or to see how you can
help pay into a customers account, example $5 into ten customers would
require a $50 donation by you. Tell LaCreek to make sure tanks are full
for ALL area residents between the months of November to March and to
collect any delinquent payments between April and October.

Also, check out this non-profit to see if it is appropriate for you:
Arlene Catches The Enemy Ext 13.
Tax Deductable, Non-Profit (501-c-3). She can take credit cards over the
phone: Pine Ridge Emergency Fund, C/O Economic Development Administration
PO Box 669, Pine Ridge, SD[masked]

And call Lakota Plains Propane at and find out what homes have
elderly or children and if they need money put down on their account to be
able to have a warm home tonight.

List to assist Elders at Pine RidgeShare

Below are several Elders in the Kyle Community of Pine Ridge that are in
immediate need of assistance. The contact information has been confirmed
and permission has been granted to share their information with you.

There are several ways I will mention where assistance is needed and I'll
share here before I begin the information for where you can assist in
paying for Propane for those who need it or to contact a local grocery
store to pay for food for families who need this. Other ways of assisting
the individual families will be listed with their contact information

To pay for propane for any individuals listed below use the information
here and be sure to make your payment to the account of the individual(s)
you choose to help. The propane company requires a minimum order of $120
of fuel before they will make a delivery to the individual. You can also
pay for a persons propane and they will credit the individuals account so
that when they do run out of any fuel they may have at the moment they can

simply call and the company will deliver more.

Lakota Plains Propane (will take credit card)

Be sure to request a receipt and use the contact for the person you are
helping to call and followup to be certain they received the help you paid
