Living in the Bible Belt as a skeptic can be tough. When your own Governor calls for a "day of prayer" to fix a drought, you know it's getting bad! This group was started for several reasons. The first of which is just for a social function. It's important that skeptics stop hiding and start making themselves known so that we can become an accepted member of society by these people that think we are headed straight for Hell! We want to start putting a positive image on skeptics and non-believers in the South and that starts by getting to know each other. Eventually, we'd like to participate in charitable events so that people will see that we are as generous as any other religious person.
For now, these meetups will be very informal. Just us getting together. Later, we hope to make it more formal (sometimes) complete with topics of discussion and maybe even guest speakers. If you are a skeptic and would like to know more, you are welcome to join us. Our group is not exclusive to just people who identify as "atheists." It is for anyone who believes that nonsense and superstition should be replaced by science and reason. This includes agnostics, secular humanists, Brights and others.
