Come try this exciting dance form, inspired by traditional dances of the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and the Mediterranean. Bellydancing is a terrific workout that promotes good posture, strengthens core muscles, and helps you develop amazing coordination and control over your movements. It’s great for people of any size, shape, age, and gender!

In this series for beginning bellydancers, students will work on many basic movements, movement combinations and patterns that are integral to bellydance, and practice putting them to music.

Please bring water and a yoga mat, if you have one, for stretching at the end of class.

I recommend wearing comfy clothes in which you'll have a full range of motion. I usually prefer to wear yoga pants (or pants flared around the ankles) and a top that's a little bit form-fitting, as these are useful to allow others to see my movements clearly. If students wear something similar, that helps me to see what is going on, if their movements don't quite match what they're striving to do. Pants are more helpful than skirts, for this. Sashes or hipscarves are fine in my class (as long as they are not shedding excessively), and I have some extras to lend. Socks or flat shoes that allow full flexibility of the sole are probably the best footwear options.

Uptown Gallery is a white building with frosted windows, on the south side of Niles Blvd., midway between F and G streets (between the Fire Station and the parking lot for Mr. Mikey's Country Store and Deli).

From the Fremont Bart station you can hop on the 216 AC Transit bus toward Union City, which will bring you right into the heart of downtown Niles. You can disembark the bus at the SE corner of Niles Blvd and F Street (in front of Mr. Mikey’s). Walk about ¾ block east, and look for the white building (before the Fire Station). From the Union City Bart Station, you could take the 216 towards Mowry Ave. and Silliman Cr. (Newark), and disembark on the SE corner of Niles Blvd and F St. Walk about ¾ block east to Uptown Gallery.
