The January #CGWeb meetup for 2016 features Ri Liu and Hugh Kennedy on data visualisation and implicit geometry rendering. Dribbles and nibbles will be provided after the talks for you to mingle.

Visualising Data with Code
Ri Liu

Ri will be going through her approach to creating web-based data visualisations. Starting with a short primer on data vis, followed by a look at the best tools to use (spoiler alert, it's D3) and then a breakdown of process. She will be covering a few of her projects including Close The Gap (http://closethegap.studiometric.co/), Motion Data (http://ri.id.au/posts/motion-data), China Is Not a Rogue Donor (https://www.foreignaffairs.com/infographics/2015-10-15/china-not-rogue-donor) (for Foreign Affairs magazine) and Gender dynamics in my social network (http://ri.id.au/posts/biases).

Sculpting Procedural Content with Implicit Surfaces
Hugh Kennedy

Traditionally 3D content is created and rendered using triangle meshes, however a new primitive is starting to emerge: the Implicit Surface. This is the somewhat mysterious technique used on Shadertoy, and brings with it a range of new applications that are finding their way from the demoscene into commercial projects.

Hugh will introduce the fundamentals of working with implicit surfaces and the approaches you can take to start experimenting with them today.

When: 19 January 2016, 6:15pm for 6:30pm start

Where: Common Code ( https://goo.gl/maps/YGHTDFVemU42 )

Directions: Take the train from Parliament Station to Victoria Park or Collingwood Station and a short walk to venue.

The presentation format is 20 minutes + 10 minutes Q&A.

Computer Graphics on the Web is kindly sponsored by Common Code for its excellent managers and event venue. Food and drinks are sponsored by the wonderful Khronos Group, the open standards body for OpenGL and friends.

This meetup is co-located and hosted by the Khronos Melbourne Chapter (https://www.meetup.com/Khronos-Melbourne-Chapter/).

We hope to see you at the event!
