Each meeting, books from different sides of a controversial topic will be discussed in order to learn more about the topic.
The news often gives us a simplified snapshot of the issues. Hopefully this book club will provide a chance to learn about the nuances of the arguments, and get some context behind the stats and facts that are thrown around. We'll surely have some good debates, but the goal is more to understand the arguments and root assumptions rather than convince members one way or the other.
This month we're going to try having everyone read the same book, which for this month is called "Just FOOD," and is about food controversy. Locally grown, genetically modified, free or fair trade, humane treatment of animals?
Future topics could include anything, perhaps: gun control, religion, the war in Iraq, welfare, stem cell research, bail out spending, school vouchers, outsourcing, global warming, or smaller or sub topics (global warming: nuclear power, cap and trade, C02 regulation, etc). Feel free to email new book / article suggestions. We'll vote on next month's topics via email after some suggestions come in.
Our next Controversial topic will be on FOOD, and the controversy surrounding how best to feed the planet. For example, organic or conventional, fair or free trade, pure or genetically engineered, wild or farm-raised fish, locally grown or big factory grown?
I'd like to try out a new format this time after hearing feedback from members that reading more than one book takes too much time. Read more
