What we’re about
This group is run by Abby and Hayley, Reference Librarians with the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library at the Central Library and Crozet Library respectively, and is to promote writing within the Charlottesville area community through the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library.
Writers of all levels are welcome, so join if you would like to get inspiration and more practice writing, peer feedback on your writing, or to discover new writing resources. It is free and there are several meetings each month, geared toward actively writing in a group (Creative Writing), getting feedback (Writing Critique), and meeting authors that can give you pointers on writing (Meet the Author events).
Creative Writing meetings consist of short writing exercises, writing prompts, and sharing aloud (encouraged, but not required).
Our written statement:
"The purpose of the Creative Writing group is to provide a positive and productive atmosphere for writers to grow, learn, and connect in a safe, respectful environment. When writers share, they should be respectful of others' beliefs and backgrounds, and when they listen, should withhold stated judgment on that writing to allow creative expression.
The purpose of the Writing Critique group is for writers to receive constructive feedback on how to improve writing by sharing previously written work with others and opening up discussion on how to improve upon it. During critique, be respectful with your feedback, and give constructive criticism to the writing style, tone, and feel of the piece without criticizing the writer's expressed beliefs and opinions. In turn, you can expect that your piece will be evaluated fairly and that you will receive constructive feedback on your own work."
