Be An Artist Now!Animation/Illustration. Speaker:Academy Award Winner:Andy Monks

Be An Artist Now!

Creative Professionals Unite Brisbane present our first ever event: Be An Artist Now. The theme is Animation and Illustration and it's going to be awesome! Even if you're not an illustrator or animator, this event will be a lot of fun and cross disciplinary and a chance to hear from an amazing artist and meet your fellow creative friends.

We are kicking things off in line with National Youth Week and the night will include the following activities:

  • An Interactive Drawing activity where everyone can get to know each other.
  • A presentation from Academy Award winning Illustrator and Animator, Andy Monks.
Andy will outline his journey to becoming a successful artist and the steps he took to get there.
I'm really excited to have Andy speaking, he is a really engaging speaker and warm personality and it will be great opportunity to ask him questions about the industry.
  • We will be screening animations, and showing art works from established animators and illustrators and more emerging artists.
  • Group members will be able to present 3 minute presentations about what projects they are working on and what they might need or offer to the group, ie collaborators, graphic design work, sound recording etc.
  • Raffle Prize Draw

Andy Monks is an Australian based freelance Illustrator who has worked for many major entertainment and animation houses internationally and locally including Animal Logic. Clients have included Disney, Warner Bros and Village Roadshow.
He has also worked on advertising for Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and music clips for band's like Silverchair. As well as numerous film projects including Inspector Gadget 2, George of the Jungle and Happy Feet.
Andy has won numerous awards for his work including an Academy Award for Happy Feet for Best Animated Film 2007 as well as numerous Art Director and Animation and Effects Awards.

The event will be at Visible Ink Youth Space

Great meetup, glad I went. For anyone interested in the hack-a-thon (I'm stu by the way), go to this URL, sign up and make a post under hack-a-thon saying that you're interested. Once I have some numbers, I'll organize a venue and we'll be good to go.

Super! It was great to get out and meet other people who share the same hopes, passions and even fears that you do. Being an artist doesn't have to be lonely and isolated and I think this really helps remedy that expectation : )

Thanks to everyone who came to listen. Great Work Lionel setting these up. There is strength in numbers and if all artists in QLD worked together we could create a huge community and government support. Here's some links for everyone of some of the things I mentioned in my talk: Forums (to share work and get feedback) The Drawing Board (More toon based, check out the drawing Jam):http://www.... ConceptArt.org (Concept Art/ Fantasy/Sci Fi, more realism): http://www.... Also if you you want to check out my site and blog: Blog: http://andy... Folio: http://www.... Thanks, See you all soon!

Seems like Lionel is off to a fantastic start with these Brisbane Creative Professionals shenanigans. The session was very informative and entertaining and the interactive drawing activity half-way through was an awesome social icebreaker. Big thanks to Lionel, Mari, Matt, Andy and the rest of the crew for their contributions and setting this up. Unfortunately this particular creative couldn't stick around for the project pitching after Andy's talk, but no doubt it went well. Kudos to those that came along as well, for being enthusiastic about their craft and sharing the experience. I'll be interested to see where this goes in the future, wherever that may be, it's gonna be good!
