Our meetup group is one of the members of the Washington DC Coalition of Reason (DC CoR). I had the good fortune to be the Webmaster for this project and thus had a ring side seat as the project evolved and was formally launched today, October 19, 2010. We were noted on channel 4 news today and we are expecting wider media coverage tomorrow. I am expecting a firestorm of debate where comments are allowed with web based articles. I would like to encourage our members to find these debates and contribute our perspectives where we can.

The DC CoR has organized an upcoming service project at the Washington Area Food Bank. Earlier today I forwarded to the coordinator of the event six people who wanted to volunteer. I got the last six available slots. This will be a delightful event showing that the Godless can work together for the common good.

The DC CoR will also march together at the Rally to Restore Sanity/March to Keep Fear Alive on October 30. The event on the Mall will start at Noon. We will have further details added to the neetup description as they become available.

Next Sunday we will have the second annual Robert G. Ingersoll Oratory Contest. We can expect a crowd of over 100. Last year most of the speakers had videos of their performances posted to You Tube. On average there was a couple hundred views of each of them. This seems to be a good mechanism for getting a secular message out to a wide audience.

Last Friday, October 16 we had an excellent discussion group on 'atheists and community.' Thanks to Justin, Jennifer ?JJ? Jank's comments are available in a podcast on our site see:

The Christian right has organized 40/40 groups designed to pray for 40 days and 40 nights before the upcoming elections. Their goal is put their neo-fascist perspectives into places of power because of the confused notion that ?God? wants this. Every small step toward building secular community provides some countervailing sanity.

There are a couple of small changes that I have made to our meetup. One is that we are for the moment not a ?private? group. We had been private because of the excessive spam received from trolls and others promoting their products. We will a bit more inviting to new members with the private quality removed. The second is that we are using the DC CoR graphic for our site, They have a great message, ?Don't Believe in God: Join the Club.?
