I have the honor of being the Organizer of what in now one of the larger atheist meetups. I served on the Washington Area Secular Humanist Board of Directors for a dozen years until August of this year. For my last several years I served as the Vice President of WASH and I considered my role to be the strategic planner for that organization. One of my initiatives starting in 2011 was a very successful blogging effort with well over 130,000 page views to date. See: Secular Perspectives.
My theory was that the secular community needed to have a greater impact on the wider society. That small effort made over 700 excellent posts visible to a much wider audience. We need to do that for our atheist community. I am hoping that our forthcoming Atheist Perspectives blog will be even more successful.
As a start in that direction, beginning in 2013 all those who are members of our meetup will be able to email all meetup member who subscribe to the email list. This will allow us to share views about the society in which we function and what we want from our secular community. From past experience I have found that our secular community can write wonderfully intelligent and provocative essays in response to what is posted by other members in a meetup discussion. We will define our list as having the Creative Commons provisions defined here.
Expect that some list submissions will be reposted to our Atheist Perspectives blog based on this creative commons license. I will happily include bloggers who identify as other than atheists and some who are outside our meetup if they are atheist friendly and are willing to write from the science based perspective shared by most of us.
Opening up our mailing list to all members can result in more emails than desired by some members. Directions for turning off messages from the email list will be included below. We do not want to lose members because they feel that do not know how to turn off delivery of these messages or limit them to one message a day.
Direction for Turning Off or Limiting Mailing List Messages:
There is an Account menu pick in the upper right corner of the meetup web site just to the left of the Log out option. If you click on Account each of your meetups will be displayed with the option to change your “Email and notifications settings.” Near the bottom is a section that controls the emails you get from the mailing list for a given meetup. The options are: 1) As they are sent, 2.) In one daily email, and 3) Don't send me mailing list messages. Feel free to select the one that best suits your desires.
