RE: [atheists-27] Catholics

Excellent point Jim.  Church membership does not mean as much as it used to mean.  We may love the decline of Catholicism from the 23% nationally in 2007 to the 15% Catholics in millennials now.  There are obviously a number of ways in which Catholic views are becoming similar to ours even when they remain in the pews.

However, we should not underestimate how vile some views can be if people continue to expose themselves to propaganda from the pulpit.

Those who believe abortion is a sin:
Evangelicals 72%
Catholics      57%
Unaffiliated   22%

Those who believe gay sex is a sin:
Evangelicals  76%
Catholics       44%
Unaffiliated   18%

Of course, when the "unaffiliated" actually connect with others without religion (as we do here) it is highly unusual for the concept of sin to survive at all.  I heard a story over a decade ago about a WASH member who was passionately "pro-life."   I have a grand total of two people who have have voiced anything against gay marriage and even in those cases they did not argue that gay sex was wrong.   In none of these three cases was the concept of sin used to justify the position.

It's not so hard to be a catholic anymore.  Mass is timed at 45 minutes flat and Bingo Night is always a draw in towns where gambling is illegal.  The raffle for a "Basket of Cheer" is popular amongst parishioners too. Drink up!

With every TV station broadcasting activities on the Pope it is important to note how much Catholics have repudiated church teachings. Pew has released a monster 143 page study on US Catholics Open to Non-Traditional Families.

Actually most of us might prefer the more summarized news release:

http://www.pewforum.org/2015/09/02/u-s-catholics-open-to-non-traditional-families/

Some items from it:

84% find it acceptable for children to be raised by unmarried parents.

66% find it acceptable for children to be raised by gay or lesbian parents.

39% say homosexuality is not a sin.

46% say gay and lesbian marriages should be acknowledged.

49% say getting remarried without an annulment is not a sin.

66% say using contraceptives is not a sin.

44% have lived with a romantic partner outside of marriage.

88% find it acceptable for a husband and wife to choose to not have children.

59% think women should be allowed to become priests.

I was modestly happy that the Pope asked Naomi Klein, as self-described secular Jew, to help publicize his views on climate change. This shows he is not an anti-atheist bigot.

Some other good state:

52% of those raised as Catholics have left the church either permanently or temporarily.

77% of those who left the church say that they will not return.
