We want to have a good mixture of events independent of any organizing done for the Washington Area Secular Humanists events. However, I have been responsible for the next three speakers at the Maryland/DC (MDC) chapter of WASH. Jennifer Kalmanson, the chapter coordinator of MDC, was gracious enough to give me permission to get these three speakers. The first of these with be Shelley Mountjoy this Saturday, January 9. We are expecting a very large turnout for that event, mostly from the meetup community.
In the process of talking with Shelley, we created a partnership to revive the Northern Virginia chapter of WASH. Shelley is the most thoughtful, dynamic local organizer in our region. She will be the chapter coordinator with my assistance. Chapter meetings will have the benefit of her extensive knowledge of the local and national secular scene.
We had excellent attendance at the Good without God event in December. The Human Light party was an extremely enjoyable event for those who were able to get to it. It was also an informal event allowing delightful discussion with like minded people. However, it confirmed a message from some of our members that we need more events that are close to a Metro stop or are otherwise more easily accessible.
For our group as a community to have a richly varied calendar that engages the entire range of science, art, culture and fun, we need more people to be engaged in the process of creating and supporting events. We need to make it extremely easy for those people to add a small amount of energy to a process that is socially engaging and rewarding for a great many of us. We have in place a team of people who can evaluate and list events if we feel they would work for our members.
The fact is that anything that you enjoy that someone enjoys doing with other people could be enjoyable doing with other freethinkers. If you routinely enjoy a nice neighborhood restaurant and would welcome the company of your secular friends, it can be posted as a Meetup. What is needed is the activity, date, time, place, the person to be found there and how to find him or her.
We had created a new email address to submit this information. It is [address removed]. There are almost certainly meetup members who would like to see Avatar in 3D perhaps for the second time. It is for me a rather awesome achievement which will change the nature of film making. If you are willing to be the contact person for a group going to see this film just use the [address removed] email address to share the information and let us test to see how this system works.
The upside of being a ?heathen? is that we are more free to find ways to learn, grow and delight in the world around us. Our meetup group should be a resource that makes this happen for our community.
