What is CapoeiraDC?
Capoeira DC is a 501(c) 3 organization that promotes the development of the Afro-Brazilian martial art, Capoeira, in the District of Columbia. Capoeira is a unique blend of martial arts, dance, and music that evolved from the vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture. Capoeira DC is a volunteer community-based organization that aims to engage the District’s diverse populations in a physically and mentally challenging activity for the betterment of the community and for all its practitioners, with the ultimate goal being the continual nourishment of the history, music, and sport of Capoeira, worldwide.

What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is a unique blend of martial arts, dance, music and gravity defying acrobatics created by enslaved Africans in Brazil nearly 400 years ago as a form of resistance against their captures. At first glance one sees a circle of clapping onlookers, all chanting choruses to traditional call and response songs. But, in fact, it is a complex improvised game or jogo where two capoeiristas move in the center of the circle, or roda, in what resembles a competitive, combative, yet acrobatic dance.

What is Samba?
Samba, Brazil’s national dance, is an Afro-Brazilian musical and dance style where the sambista blends intricate footwork while simultaneously gyrating their hips, shoulders, and arms in an flamboyant and lively dance.
