• Documentary Filmmaking- a discussion of the process of documentary filmmaking and distribution. With Erica Ginsberg and Sam Hampton of Docs In Progress.
• Entertainment Law 101 - presented by Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts (WALA) with John Mason and Ken Kaufman
• Future of Filmmaking- a discussion of the technological advances that affect filmmaking, how to adapt, and what we can expect for the future of filmmaking. With Jonathan Powell of Look On Media and Chris Petracco of TrustedPhotoDC and Double Helix Production.

Scheduled speakers include:

• Erica Ginsberg is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Docs In Progress, a nonprofit incubator for documentary filmmakers. She has more than 20 years of experience in program administration in the nonprofit and government sectors, working in the areas of arts and culture, nonprofit management, and international professional exchanges. She is a host of The D-Word (http://www.d-word.com/), an online documentary filmmaker community with more than 10,000 members from around the world. Erica has extensive experience working with film festivals and speaking to audiences on everything from documentary fundraising to social media to international exchanges. She teaches Documentary Pre-Production and Outreach classes for Docs In Progress and facilitates work-in-progress screenings, Peer Pitches, and documentary appreciation salons.

• Sam Hampton co-founded Docs In Progress as a nonprofit organization in 2008 and served on its founding staff from 2009-2012. He was instrumental in developing the organization’s core curriculum of adult and youth educational programs and remains a key advisor and teaching artist for Docs In Progress classes. Sam balances his time between consulting with nonprofits through Hampton Consulting (http://www.hamptonconsulting.com/), and producing award-winning documentaries for the educational market. His films include My Mother’s Journey; Hidden Books; Mr. Stokes’ Mission, Transcending Surgeon, and Freak the Language. In addition to his filmmaking background, Sam has more than 25 years of experience working on social justice issues, including directing a national model community technology center and managing strategic planning and grants management for minority-serving colleges and universities.

• John Mason, of WALA, Copyright Counselors LLC and Mason Literary, is a Washington D.C. based art and entertainment and intellectual property attorney and literary agent. His practice focuses on copyright and trademark registrations and transactional matters, litigation, copyright infringement, publishing and media issues, defamation, licensing and contracts, and commercial matters relating to creative industries.

Ken Kaufman is an attorney specializing in entertainment and media law, copyright, content and music licensing, Internet law, social media, sports law, and the evolving new technologies in the entertainment and computer fields. Ken has extensive experience as both in-house and outside counsel in the entertainment and communications industries. Immediately prior to joining Manant, Phelps & Phillips LLP, Ken was a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. Previously he served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel of Showtime/The Movie Channel Inc. (now known as Showtime Networks Inc.); as Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs and General Counsel of PolyGram Records, Inc.; and as General Counsel of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

• Chris Petracco is a senior digital media specialist and content creator with over 15 years experience in communications and media production, including teaching at the college level. Chris has a comprehensive knowledge of multimedia production, social media solutions, digital media production, and digital tools to create comprehensive media campaigns. Chris helps clients develop broadcast, cable, and online products. He is the founder of TrustedPhotoDC and Double Helix Productions.

• Jonathan Powell has over ten years experience in digital product development and degrees in Marketing and Digital Media from Colorado State University. He has produced numerous virtual reality videos, launched high-profile websites, created award-winning mobile games, and completed numerous studio productions. He was previously the Design Director for Bithenergy and is now a cofounder Look On Media.

Film Screenings will take place from 7:10pm - 9:10pm.
The filmmakers will get to introduce their film live to the attending audience and answer some brief Q&A.
