DC Griot Percussionist Group Pages

Welcome everyone to the DC Griot Percussionist Group. This group is for people who are looking to learn more about traditional West African Drumming from the Griot Percussionist Medoune Gueye (aka Papa Dame).

Born in Dakar Senegal, West Africa, Papa Dame is the son of a great “Griot”- Abdou Karim Gueye. As a Senegalese “Griot”, Mr. Gueye is well known for his proficiency and unique technique in several indigenous drum styles and rhythms, including the Djembe, Sawrouba, Sabar and Kutiro drums.

In an effort to maintain historical accuracy and technical proficiency, he has developed a new standard through his creation of a unique 12- note system, adaptable to the novice as well as an expert percussionist.

This group is for people who are ready to take the next step in their studies as a West African Percussionist. Our goal is to offer several various classes geared towards peoples different interests. We have some people who may have just started drumming, while we have some people who have been drumming for years. The thing that unifies both drumming types iid the love of the craft and their passion for the art!

It is with that passion that an individual can learn the true secrets behind the art of percussion. There is a healing factor that is not paid attention to by most, however Papa Dame comes from a long lineage of Griot Percussionist who understand the gift that is the drum and how it can heal people if played correctly.

Our first group event is February 23. It is a FREE event geared towards bringing people into the drumming community, but will be the jumpstart to some new experiences. We will have Djembe, Sabar and Kuitiro sessions so that people can see which class the meet up group would like to take first. If we can find the appropriate locations (and if we get the right amount of people) we may run them all at once!

This group is an open one. We will never turn people away and are open to any suggestions you all may have as a group. Our goal is to grow as a community in the ways of the Griot Tradition of drumming!

We look forward to working with you all and growing with you all!

Peace!
