What we’re about
Muslims for Progressive Values is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 in the U.S. We are a grassroots, human rights organization that embodies and advocates for the traditional Qur'anic values of social justice, an understanding that informs our positions on women’s rights, LGBTQI inclusion, freedom of expression and freedom of and from belief.
Since our inception, we have consultative status at the U.N. as an NGO and we are a founding member of Alliance of Inclusive Muslims, or AIM, an umbrella organization spanning 13 countries and 17 cities.

While a variety of definitions of "progressive Islam" can be found, this group is guided by the words of Professor Omid Safi:
"Progressive Islam encompasses a number of themes: striving to realize a just and pluralistic society through a critical engagement with Islam, a relentless pursuit of social justice, an emphasis on gender equality as a foundation of human rights, and a vision of religious and ethnic pluralism."
We welcome all individuals to this group, regardless of your level of familiarity with Islam or progressive politics.

MPV-DC chapter meets approximately twice a month. Our meetings can be open salons for the exchange of ideas, lectures on topics in progressive Islam, interfaith gatherings, or cultural and educational outings. Recent programs include film screenings, concerts, art exhibitions, and book talks. We are open to suggestions from our members and invite you to contribute your ideas at any time. Check our calendar to see some of our recent past events as well as our upcoming plans.
This meetup is a grassroots effort run and funded by the members. The organizers are volunteers. No payment is required to be a member or attend most events but a $5 to $20 annual contribution is suggested to defray the annual $144 fees to use Meetup.com and help with the cost of the prayer space.
