Announcing a new Meetup for DC Mountain Madness!
What: Elliot Knob Training Hike with potential for self-rescue practice
When: Saturday, March 13,[masked]:30 AM
Staunton, VA 24401http://www.hikingupward.com/GWNF/ElliotKnob/
8.5 miles out and back. If anyone knows of a way to make this a loop, I'm open to upping the mileage since it's only 8.5 miles.
The summit is about 4500 feet with an elevation gain of 2500 feet. This is a great training hike for anyone training and planning for Rainier (myself included), McKinley, etc? The real challenge of this hike is the fire road. You can either ascend the entire 2500 feet or join the fire road mid way up the mountain. There is a pond below the summit, so there is a water source.
The summit is very scenic! You can watch the sunset to the west and enjoy the sunrise in the east. Part of the summit is grassy and the patch of spruce trees provides a sheltered camp site option with (2) fire pits.
Also, the fire tower (if accessible) provides more views. The fire tower offers the opportunity to practice self rescue skills. If we keep the mileage at 8.5 and the fire tower is open, I strongly suggest we do this! Self-rescue skills don't have a very long shelf life if you don't put them to use.
It's a 3.5 hour drive from DC so I recommend we either go down the night before and find some cheap motel rooms or you're looking at leaving at o'dark thirty from DC!
Hike will start at 8:30 at the trail head, so that means you'd need to leave DC no later than 5am.
