Breaking the Fourth Wall: A Community Inclusive Theatre Festival
Hosted by The DC Poetry Spot
Details
Dear Members of the DC Poetry Project:
The Diversity Theatre Company (http://www.diversitytheatre.org (http://www.diversitytheatre.org/)) invites you to play a vibrant role in the first annual Breaking the Fourth Wall Theatre Festival! Created and CO-produced by the Artistic Director, Michelle Orr, this community inclusive theatre festival creates an atmosphere for artists and community members at large to engage in a direct, purposeful and personal way to address a grievous social issue in the community.
The title "Breaking the Fourth Wall" draws on the theatrical metaphor of the imaginary "wall" that separates the audience and performer allowing the audience to see the world of a play. Traditionally the concept of "breaking the fourth wall" refers to any moment in which the performer either directly addresses the audience in character or out of character. We are using this concept as a challenge to break through passively showing or telling our audience about life and it's problematic behaviors and burdens but actively pulling them into relationship building solutions and recovery through the power of art that we experience everyday. We don't just want them to see the play we want them to be the play. This year we are breaking through the wall of mental health!
The goal is to use theatre arts as tools for healing, dialogue and expression to face the issue of mental health together as a community. We want to eliminate shame, stigma and ignorance and empower our community with knowledge, awareness and sensitivity.
You are invited to join in the festivities on Saturday, June 1st from 11am to 5pm at The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center.
