The Gazebo simulator including RVIZ, ROS and DRCSim are free robotics software for downloading. You don't need to be a programmer to install and run simulated robots. There are 100s of applications which only require installation to run. Also if you own a web cam you can do some computer/robotics vision. If you own a MS Kinect or ASUS Xtion Pro Live 3D depth camera you can Map and navigate rooms. Even if you don't own a Web Cam or depth camera the DRC simulator will simulate what the DRC robot sees. One of the DRC tutorials produces the optical image of the robots feet while it is walking. Another DRC tutorial simulates the robot moving its arm and hand as if twerling a lasso. There is a ROS webcam tutorial which detects and tracks a moving object and paints it while it moves.

There are separate free tutorials for Gazebo, ROS and DRCSim on each respective web site.
I installed a second boot partitian on my laptop for Unbuntu (dual boot Windows and Unbuntu) to run the above simulations. I have run all the above tutorials without writing code. The source code for all of the above is available for people who desire. There are two levels of source Python and C++ with 80% of the code written in Python. Python code appears to be very easy to pick up if you have any previous background at all in programming.

Great information, thanks Richard. I've been working with ROS for a while but I'm only now starting to take advantage of Rviz and and trying to get a simulator going. If you're willing to put together a tutorial I think many of us would be interested in a workshop.
