First Anniversary Release 1.0 Code Kata

First Anniversary – Release 1.0 Code Kata

Let’s celebrate one year of learning and exploration!

In honor of this special occasion this month’s DC F#  User Group will hold a uniquely fun event to improve your coding skills – Code Kata!!

All are welcome at this fun and interactive exercise, bring your co-workers, bring your friends, heck…. bring your mom!  Fun for all.

This event is designed for F# beginners who would like to learn more and as well as more experienced F# developers looking to practice their skills.  You can code in C# or F# or VB.net.

During the event there will be beer, pizza and cupcakes!

If you don't know what a Code Kata is, here's the description from Wikipedia:

Code Kata is a term coined by Dave Thomas, co-author of the book The Pragmatic Programmer, in a bow to the Japanese concept of kata in the martial arts. A code kata is an exercise in programming which helps a programmer hone their skills through practice and repetition.

You will code an algorithm against the other coders… and may the best/luckiest geek prevail!  You will earn bragging rights for a year as well as some great prizes from our sponsors!

First price $[masked] Amazon Gift card

To get the most from the session, please try and bring a laptop along with F# installed (ideally either MonoDevelop or Visual Studio Web Express/Full Edition). Check out fsharp.org for instructions on how to get F# ready on your machine.

Where: B-Line Medical is located 2 blocks south of the Dupont Circle metro stop (red line). Exit on dupont south and the building is at the corner of 19th and N street NW. Driving is not encouraged as parking will be extremely difficult. The building needs a key card to get in after 6pm but Riccardo and Khiem will be hanging around outside to let people in. B-Line medical is on the first floor of the building right around the corner at the end of the hallway.

I would have enjoyed it a bit more if there had been a VS2010-compatible version of the base code (so I didn't have to fight to get things going) -- but that was my problem more than anyone else's.

It didn't hurt that we (somewhat luckily due to random numbers) won the competition!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
