Hike for the Homeless (Urban Hike)

Join Us for a "Hike for the Homeless". We will be meeting at Hard Rock Cafe (HRC) in Downtown Dallas (park at an all day lot). Please bring a donation of one of the following that will be distributed to the Dallas Homeless during the hike: Bundle of Socks (new), Gloves, Coat (used or new), Rain Gear (used or new).

We will meet at HRC for a beverage and then take a 4-5 mile hike that will take us through parts of downtown and through an area where we can deliver the coats to the homeless. Afterward we may stop by the Iron Cactus or one of the nearby restaurants for a refreshing beverage or a bite to eat.

PARKING: You should park in a parking lot that is all day parking, there is parking under the bridge and on the opposite side of the highway for West End. There is a parking garage for Hard Rock Cafe just be sure you avoid parking at The House Condos. The entrance to the HRC garage is on the west side of the building. I had an issue with the parking receipt when I was there recently but it was quickly resolved. I am told the first two hours are free. We cannot wait for anyone to re-park their vehicles this year because the group is so large so please pay close attention to the towing signs and parking signs and the hours of parking. Do not park at meters as they will run out before we return and you may be ticketed. We are not responsible for tickets or towed cars. Hide all valuables in your car.

Please dress comfortably, wear good hiking shoes.

Leave watches, rings and valuables at home.

It feels very good to help the less fortunate and doing this on foot made it worth the venture. I love walking so to do some sight seeing was worth the trip. However I would have liked better organization between the group leaders. I believe everyone in the entire group would have benefited (esp those not familiar with Dallas' history) with the group leaders educating the people w/some of the historical sites. I do realize this event was not geared for that but it would have made for a much more interesting walk to "The Bridge". Host also should have indicated that for those that did not want to meet up at 11:30 to eat, should meet at a designated time when the entire group was ready to leave the restaurant at the start of the hike. Thanks for organizing this!

Attention group captains: When you arrive you will receive a two way radio, a laminated colored paper and a map. Once we have all finished at Hard Rock Cafe a message will be broadcast to meet across the street in the courtyard. We will organize into our groups as each participant will be receiving a corresponding colored card which will be used to identify you as their captain. Once we are organized we will start our hike. The only thing you will have to do is make sure that everyone gets through the cross walks safely and observes pedestrian law. If anyone looks like they are having problems keeping up you will just radio me and I will slow down the pace. There will also be parks along the way that we will stop at so the group can catch up and rest. This is going to be a blast and a BIG thanks to our volunteers and participants in this years 2012 Hike for the Homeless (H4H)! Best wishes, Mother (DFWA)

H4H Day is almost here! A few reminders:

    - Review the event posting details.
    - Bring a printed copy of the map.
    - Bring a coat or blanket to donate.
    - Additional donations can be dropped off later.
    - Bring water and a power snack.
    - Bring cash for parking, food and tips when dining.
    - If you have a two way radio to bring set to Channel 5.
    - Observe all pedestrian laws.

You will be receiving a color coded card at the event. Hold onto this and return to organizer at the end of the event. The card is to help us break the group into two smaller groups with captains so that we can communicate better and maintain a comfortable pace.

There are plans for a video to be made of the event, you can view the video and posted pictures of all events on our FaceBook page: http://www.facebook.com/dfw.adv...

DFWA will continue to host community charity hikes benefiting:

To answer a members question. I actually didn't start this myself, I give that honor to my mom. When I was a kid my father lost his job and the Holiday Season was looking very bleak. My parents and I agreed instead of being concerned with what we didn't have we would appreciate what we did have, a roof over our head, food on the table and each other. We went to down town Fort Worth to see the Christmas Tree and when walking back to our car we saw a man sleeping on a bench with only newspaper to keep him warm. My family agreed to pool our holiday money that we were going to use to by each other gifts and spend it on blankets for the homeless. We handed them out together and that is the most memorable Christmas I have ever had! I now share that joy with all of you, thanks mom!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
