SOUTHLAKE: Role of the Project Manager in Scrum

There has been a great deal of discussion on one of the LinkedIn groups about Project Managers and what to do with them! Do Scrum teams need a PM or is the role absorbed by the SM and PO. If your governance board insists on there being a PM, how do they contribute to the project.

Lance Dacy and Chris Eberhardt of ACTIVE Network will facilitate a session to find that balance and help understand what Scrum actually says about it.

Interesting, thought-provoking, maybe even unifying. Lance and Chris setting the stage with 2 slides summarizing the 2 roles helped. Especially the hub-and-spoke PM slide, which brought home the realization that all the stuff that a PM typically does must be fulfilled somehow, by someone. The best way to do that is to deliberately ID what's necessary and ensure that it's someone's responsibility... and for most (or all?) of those spokes, that person is not the Scrum Master. The small-team exercises helped, too. All in all, a great session! Thanks!

A suggestion was to have the meeting on alternative nights so member could attend both. I think this is a great idea so we can be in two place at once! Residing in one space collecting data with the increased probability that application is just a stone's throw away.

Lots of great discussions where our team drove many of the discussions as we navigated what duties and responsibilities do Project Managers have. In Scrum, those duties don't go away, they get re-distributed back to the various roles of the teams. AND we still sometimes need a Project Manager helping us GTM.

BTW, The Container Store is hiring for a Scrum Master position in Coppell, TX. This is a wonderful company that continues to prove that when the fundamentals are right (trust and transparency, leadership alignment, human values, techinacle competiancy) the outcomes like frequently shipping working tested software is an enjoyable, valuable endevor. Do you want to smile when you wake up and go to work?
