Sister Grove trail workday series 2014

First posted trail work day of 2014! A lot of work was done last year, making SG fun to ride again, but winter has been harsh, and will probably necessitate branch clean up and dirt work. We are still working on trail improvements from last year (signage, rut repair, cutting down some large trees) but we have come a long way!

This event is also posted in my group Greenville Texas Bicycle Transportation, and on Dorba.org

Michael, Could you please send me a copy of the Pay Dirt form for my records? Thanks. Steve Minnerly ([masked])

If this means the trail work waiver, yes. I was about to mail them off, but I can take it to Staples before I send it off.

Kurt couldn't make it because of a sick family member. I didn't see or hear from Bill. I got out there at 7:15 and there were several volunteers from DORBA meetup ready to go. We moved truckloads of dirt and filled a big crevice in the trail. I'm looking forward to next trail work-day. Thanks to Dana and Dennis, Steve, and Daniel, and Taylor (new DORBA member).

Unless it rains tonight, we're on for trail work. Mike[masked] Call me if you come later than 0700 (no problem) and figure out where we are. We are starting on the big gash on Sister Loop downhill from the parking lot. It needs to be filled before it causes a crash.

I will go hike some on SG today about 4 or 5pm, and post back here when I get home. I expect the workday is ON, and the trail open.

That's ok. Catch us another time or bike in one of the mass-start rides or events this year. Good luck.

So far so good. If it doesn't rain/snow again, we should be in good shape for resuming operations. Same as before, come out whatever time you want, just call me to meet up. There's plenty to do, and the big rut will probably take quite a while.

Michael, I have some extra 5 gallon buckets I'll bring too.

Awesome. Thanks. I got another shovel and one of those clippers with the gears in it. It's great. I used it some in my yard.

I will not be there 02 08 14. I will check Thursday or Friday before the new date [masked]) and post updates on all forums.

Just got back from Sister Grove. I hiked the Puppy Loop with my family. PDL is in good shape, but the ground is too soft, and there is snow falling now. I picked up sticks and fixed the map in the kiosk while I was out there. I will try in 2 weeks and go out there to check, so keep in touch. if it's still nasty in 2 weeks, I'll keep trying every 2 weeks till we can do at least the tree cutting. Y'all stay warm, and thanks for supporting Sister Grove trail fans.

I will be in Fville today to see if the trail is navigable or a bog. I'll post this evening if we are running or not. If postponed, I'll try in 2 weeks.

Snow in Greenville all day today. Trying to find out if Farmersville has snow. It may still be possible to do trail work. Check here tomorrow Friday and I will post ASAP if we're rained/snowed out.

I will check out there in person Friday and post back here afternoon or evening whether we're rained out or not. I rode this trail a few days ago (Sister and Lake Loops) it was in fairly good shape. The new switchbacks I cut last year with the crew are still visible and holding up well. All the branch cutting paid off, but a few sections need clearing after several months, and a few fallen logs will need to go. The big trunk over the end of Lake loop finally fell down. you can walk over it with your bike, till we saw it up .

Forecast looks good. I expect it to be dry, a little windy, and cold. Dress in layers! Bring gloves. I need people to bring shovels and 5gal buckets if they have it. I've got shovels, picks, and other tools. We will be filling in dirt ruts and shaping the trail surface.

Mornings make me mean. I'm going to have my coffee and breakfast burrito and start digging at[masked]/08/14. I'll feel better after some caffeine and getting some circulation going. If 1 person shows up, or 20 people show up, it's going to be good. I'll be camping out all day. I'm sick of winter already, looking forward to biking without needing 5 layers, and dreaming about a fast circuit like SG was 10 years ago. I remember running out of gears on some parts summers ago, and still try to beat the climbs. I haven't given up on this trail. 2014 will be epic for SG.

Michael, "CASH" from DORBA posted a question about the time on the DORBA/Forum. You might want to check it out and update it. I'll see you there on the 8th.

If you have some kind of tools, for your own use or to share with group, please let me know. (shovels, branch saws, loppers, etc.) I am planning to ride out there this weekend and take GPS notes of the worst spots (ruts or trees), and attempt to find paths a truck can get nearby them. The main 2 to work on now are reachable by pickup. Most of the other ruts are easily done with a few shovels just filling and leveling/angling for proper water drainage. If you are experienced with gas clippers or chain-saws, please let me know so I can catalog that for this or future work-days to employ your skills.

If you're coming to this event and showing up later than 0700 AM (which is fine), call me on phone[masked] to locate the group.

I'll be glad to help! I've never ridden this trail, so it will be good to scope it out! Do you need me to bring anything?

    • Michael T.

Hello. Yes, you can bring gloves, a shovel, shoes you don't mind getting dirty (trail is clay, grass, and mud sometimes), safety glasses if you want to use weedeaters etc. If you don't have anything, you can borrow some trail tool or machine (mower, weeder, clippers, etc)

Oh I have lots of yard tools-I'll just throw them in my truck the night before.
