Impacted Anal Glands & Fiber Question

I need help! Poor Henry had been under the weather for a few days this past week. I was concerned he might have a UTI because of where he was focusing his attention. Monday night he woke up and crawled out from under his nappy blanket and looked VERY unhappy and would NOT unwind his tail. I didn't think a dachshund tail could be so firmly tucked/wrapped up into a dog's tummy! It looked horrible compared to the happy spaz tail Henry normally has and it immediately set of a gazillion alarm bells. We made it through the night and my husband took Henry to our vet (The Pet Clinic) expecting to drop him off and go on to work but the staff was incredibly kind and rushed my two guys right into an exam room.

So it turns out that even with me draining Henry's anal glands on a regular basis (about every other week) that one had become impacted and had to be expressed from the INSIDE. Oh the indignity! Poor Henry! He's still on the mend and still very unhappy with the world, but his tail is finally starting to unwrap and wag a bit.

I feed Henry a high quality organic dog food from The Green Spot and give him about 2Cs of frozen green beans throughout the day to supplement the small amount of food he gets. Can anyone recommend other fiber to get in his diet so he doesn't have to go through this again? Is it OK to give dogs Metamucil or other human fiber supplements? I use a store knock-off of Metamucil myself but I'm worried about the sugar content for Henry.

I'd really love to hear what other people do to avoid this issue. Thanks so much!
