Thank you, Cheri. That's a wonderful quote.
I do think you're right about the final wind. He has been softly "woofing" at me every so often over the past hour, something he's done maybe three times in weeks. It was strange but the first time he did it I was looking at a picture of him and Shadow and telling him they'd get to play in the grass just like that and he woofed in my ear. The second time I'd asked him if he remembered Mommy. Coincidence, I'm sure but it makes me feel better.
I've been holding him and will sit with him outside in a few minutes. I told him he could eat anything he wanted today.
Thank you so much.

I am so sorry for you and Max.  All of our hearts break for you right now.  If it's any consolation, I do think you're doing the right thing for Max.  It's the hardest thing we can do as pet owners.  Knowing when to let them go when our hearts tell us we want them to stay....
As I said yesterday, it always seems they get a final wind so they can spend some special time with us before they let go of us.  I think that's what Max is doing today.  Spend some special time with him like Kari did with Pi and you'll have no regrets later when you look back.  We're all with you today.

One of my favorite dog quotes....

It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are. - Anonymous
