Map visualizations and graphics

We will be exploring how to use R to create map visualizations and graphics.  Creating map graphics can be a insightful and stunning visualization tool.  R is perfect for developing map graphics for data analysis and presentation.  Larry is presenting this month with his experience of creating map visualizations.

In this meetup we will explore

• Getting map data into R

• Plotting maps and map projections

• Overlaying data on top of the map

• Various map packages available on CRAN

• Advanced visualization effects

Please join the Dallas R Users Group to explore, learn, collaborate, and network with fellow R users in the Dallas metroplex area.

Hi all, sorry for jumping in - is there any chance I can have a copy of Larry's presentation slides? I used ggmap to create a crime heat map back in June and converted it to a Shiny app recently (http://blenditbayes.shinyapps.io/crimemap/). Would love to find out more about available visualisation techniques. Thanks!

Absolutely. I posted the markdown file in the Files section. I still need to create a PDF of the slides

Thanks Larry! That's very kind of you. The Dallas R group got so many interesting meetings! Really wish I could be there and attend one someday :)

Great talk! Very informative introduction to mapping in R.

A couple of relevant links I thought may be of interest here:
    1. I came across this post today (http://blenditbayes.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/visualising-crime-hotspots-in-england_25.html) which does a similar example to Larry's crime example, but using ggmap.
    2. In regards to the discussion on interactive mapping or updating your maps, I thought a couple of links demonstrating mapping in Shiny might be of interest to some:
    - Here's one that I've been playing with lately on visualizing "magnitude" of various points around the globe: http://spark.rstudio.com/trestletech/globePopulation/
    - And here's a more useful one along the lines of what Larry demo'd with Google Maps but using a framework called Leaflet. http://glimmer.rstudio.com/jcheng/leaflet-demo/ (Code available at https://github.com/jcheng5/leaflet-shiny/)

This is my first time to join R good. Larry gave a very good presentation, detailed and with good examples. I learn a lot about map visualization. Thank you ,Larry!

Once again, a great presentation by Larry that gave a general overview of one of R's capabilities. Every time he does a presentation I leave the meeting with a hundred ideas about things to do next with the things he demonstrates.

Another great presentation providing insight into the capabilities of R. Provided lots of information appropriate for an audience of mixed experience and skill levels. Looking forward to more presentations by this presenter.

Provided some basic insight into the capabilities, unfortunately the speaker does not have a GIS or cartography background which limited his ability to exploit the potential for Geo-visualization in R.
