Hi Gned,

Thanks for your message about the meetup.  The meetup is for those who are interested in or who call themselves Brights.  You can learn more about it at

The definition of a Bright from their website:  "the term bright refers to a person whose worldview is naturalistic--free of supernatural and mystical elements. A Bright's ethics and actions are based on a naturalistic worldview."

So this definition does include atheists but also others as well, including Objectivists;  Anyone who does not believe in the supernatural.

Children and parents will be the focus of this meetup.  There are several other atheist/humanist meetup groups in the DFW area that seem to cater to singles or those without kids. I actually have a list compiled of the current meetups and groups at

I am hoping to fill a need with this meetup by making each meeting not just child friendly, but a place where children can meetup too.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Shannon Croft

- Interesting. I wasn't sure whether this group was for only
atheists or for all religious minorities or what. Someone's comment
mentioned atheists but it also mentioned heathens;
Heathenism/Paganism is a naturalistic polytheistic holistic
non-aggressive religion which I like much better than mainstream
aggressive monotheistic religions. I'm sure there's a need for an
Atheistic and/or Agnostic support/fellowship group for families just
as there is for other religious minorities. Will this one be pretty
much Atheistic and all the discussions based on that frame of
reference to the point that other religious minorities might not
feel they have enough common ground to relate to? Just curious, not

Also I'm thinking of starting a singles group for religious
minorities, that would be a separate group of course. Single
Christians can find each other so easily even if they don't go to
explicitly Christian singles groups, since most singles groups will
have mostly Christians because most of the general population is
Christian (at least nominally), so I figure a non-Christian singles
group would improve the chances of finding each other for the
religious minorities. This isn't a plug, I just thought someone
might respond to this idea as well, either pro or con.

Are any of y'all Objectivists? a sort of mostly Atheistic
libertarian a la Ayn Rand type of group - just curious. I might try
to rejoin NTOS after I finally get a chance to finish reading Atlas

Also is your group only for those who currently have kids? I have a
girlfriend that has a daughter and if someday we get married or live
together then I'll become a step-parent in effect. Also does your
group address the special concerns of mixed families e.g.
non-mainstream parents with Christian spouses or exes or children?
I'm sure that's tricky enough for Atheists, I can tell you it's even
more dangerous for members of persecuted religious minorities - even
these days, Witches and other Pagans lose their kids to meddling
authorities happily taking advantage of religious prejudice and
veangeful exes.

I hope this isn't too many questions, maybe it'll start some good
discussions. If this group isn't a good match for me, that's OK, I
just wanted to find out. Y'all have fun either way. :)

Gned the Gnome - philosopher etc.
Back from out of town and still catching up
