Nameste,
The Sufi interpretation of biblical stories are such that they apply to each individual life. Moses being lost in the desert for 40 years, is the first 40 years of everyone in life chasing worldly education, fame, money, family, kids, etc.
Around the age of 40 once that is all in order one hears the call of the spirit and becomes more religious. Now Moses goes to mount Sini for 40 days to be alone and makes contact with the divine. A pursuit in the opposite direction starts which is symbolized by the monastic life of Jesus. One may stay at either of these extreme paths but the ideal is after finding the Truth, to come back and create a balance between the body and the spirit, which is symbolized by the middle path of Mohammad and Islam's surrendering to God's will in all actions by being an instrument for God to work in the world. The Quran says all profits were Muslims. A Muslim is one who has no ego and has surrendered to God's will. There is a beautiful prayer stating the desire for this state of full surrender in the Quran which brings bliss and peace.
