Operations Research has long helped large organizations and governments make better decisions through statistics and data. Now, this new-fangled Data Science thing comes along yet the two groups remain mostly separated, particularly ironic given OR's strong presence in Washington DC.

Thus, DIDC has teamed up with the excellent WINFORMS ( https://www.meetup.com/WINFORMS/, a professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of operations research and the management sciences in the greater Washington DC area) to bring to you a number of different companies using operations research and optimization techniques to create value from data.

Data-driven Methods for Causal Analysis of Emergency Room Delays

Abstract: Emergency Room (ER) delay is a widespread problem that negatively affects patient safety, quality of care, and patient satisfaction. We employ novel data analytics approaches such as competing risk analysis and Bayesian networks in conjunction with historical data comprised of more than 8 million records and 70,000 ER visits in three years to study the root causes of ER delays. Competing risk survival analysis identifies contribution of each cause to the length of delay. Bayesian network models show interaction among different causes of delay. This analysis shows that ER delays were mostly related to the hospital operations outside the ER. Expanding ER, increasing staff, or improving operations of ER were less likely to have an impact on delay than interventions that improved hospital occupancy (better discharge, expansion of beds, etc.) or improved laboratory response times.

Presenter Bio: Shervin AhmadBeygi is currently the director of systems redesign in the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. His key research areas are in modeling and solving complex real-world optimization problems under uncertainty using mathematical programming and simulation with applications to health care, transportation, and aviation. He is an active member of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS) and the Washington DC chapter.
