Introduction to d3

  • Nov 19, 2013 · 6:30 PM

We are excited to have Oswald Campesato, author of HTML5 Canvas and CSS3 Graphics Primer, coming to give an introductory session on d3.

Abstract
This introductory session discusses the open source JavaScript library D3, whose emphasis on web standards embraces the capabilities of modern browsers, combining powerful visualization components and a data-driven approach to DOM manipulation. Since D3 leverages HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML5 Canvas, and also provides a layer of abstraction over SVG, you can create a remarkable range of data visualizations.

This beginner's session is primarily a code-oriented presentation that focuses on some D3 'fundamentals', so be prepared to delve into D3 code samples.

If time permits, we'll look at some code samples from a D3 open source project, and also learn how to deploy D3-based mobile apps to Android devices (including Google Glass) This session concludes with a book raffle of one of my books that was published in 2013.

Hi, I know Oswald didn't have time to go into options for developing apps with D3, but in case you might be interested, we've introduced a beta of a tools (based on eclipse birt project and jQuery Mobile, that helps make it easy to build interactive data analytics and visualizations with libraries such as d3. The beta is at mobileapp.birtondemand.com. We did an example app using d3 and an FAA data source on nationwide flight delays to produce an interactive US map that let's you explore causes of delays by airport, airline, delay cause etc. by any time period etc.

A big thank you to everyone who attended (you guys were awesome!) and also my thanks to Todd for inviting me to do a D3 presentation.

Incidentally, I could have easily talked for another 3 hours about D3 et al (alas, we were a bit short on time), which I'm sure you've figured out if you attended tonight's session~:)

Thanks for the presentation, Oswald. You were skilled at summarizing and deep-diving whenever anyone had followup questions.

Hi - will see you all soon!
If any D3 newbies (like me) are interested in joining a 'just for fun' "Political Intelligence" project - please grab me at the event for a chat.
We're going to repurpose our basic UK prototype to cover US politics and do D3 visualizations on federal and state political intelligence

    cheers!

A quick note to RSVP'ed attendees: in case you're wondering, this session will be similar to my sessions at HTML5DevConf and SVCC (both in October/2013), so if you do decide to attend a repeat session, I'll have to come up with some new lame jokes~:)

I was under the impression that the presos and videos from HTML5DevConf are posted online. Do you happen to know the link for yours?
