Instead of their standard Bitcoin pitch, would have appreciated a more technical discussion (as we are a Data Science meetup).

Got some video of the talks. The slides are kind of unreadable, so I'm going to get a copy then throw it up on YouTube or something.

Excellent format of the meeting. It did start late so that was the only negative.

I'm interested in discussing the challenges crypto currencies face as financial instruments for commerce & value storage. When prices can change +/- 10% or more in a day, liquidity is light and conversion to/from real currency is both expensive and difficult, I find it hard to imagine moving or storing any sizable value using them. Will volatility stabilize to the point where I can think of buying $1K in bitcoins without worrying about the BTC/USD exchange rate? Will the processing and exchange networks grow in volume to support the promise of ultra-low transaction fees and other agency costs?

    May 29, 2013

    • Travis T.

Derivative instruments may reduce volatility in the short term but may add it in the long run. But, you are right that confidence is key.

As I said below, conversion to/from fiat will be solved at the local level. Right now Bitcoin is very new and the price is being influenced by speculators. As the market grows, not many people will have large enough capital to influence the market. Moving away from large exchanges means that the market also can't be influenced by a large scale DDOS.

That numbers show that USD -> BTC is not really a thing to worry about.

Hmm... I think the recent Liberty and Dwolla actions adversely impact bitcoin. It makes it more difficult to convert from crypto to real currency, at least for US citizens, and casts negative press that stifles adoption and enthusiasm outside of the core bitcoin following.

That I can agree on, but I think Mt.Gox and other major exchange's time is coming. The future is more at the local level with things such as Bitcoin ATMs. You saw how many people were lined up at the Bitcoin conference to try the ATM? Transferring fiat money to and from Bitcoin should take 15 seconds, not 5 steps though an exchange.

Definitely want to discuss these legal issues threatening digital currencies tonight.

Has streaming or recording been considered for those events that the group feels may have above-normal interest?

Unfortunately I have a last minute change of plans.
