Third Meetup - Call For Speakers!

  • This location is shown only to members

  • We have not run a data science oxford meetup for sometime. The group has been growing and we are now have over 100 members! To celebrate we at NaturalMotion Games are happy to host the third meetup and provide the beer!

We would like to put out a call for speakers. Please get in touch and let me know if you could speak for 15-30 minutes on a project, interesting technology, area of expert/research or a field of data science you really like and have used in your research or day to day work.

I'd love to make this happen and get in a third meetup organised before the end of the year.

    Many Thanks

I am digital producer at Global Canopy, a rainforest think tank in Oxford I am working on a project in Guyana using Googles ODK technology with 32 local community recorders working on cMRV. Community MRV stands for Community Monitoring, Reporting and Verification. The goal of our project is to create a toolkit for forest communities to monitor the state of their forests and their own wellbeing under new schemes such as REDD+. We train local people in Guyana to do the monitoring and share the information with their communities. We are using smartphone and web technology to create an ‘end-to-end’ solution that allows the monitors to collect, store, analyse and share their information.

Quote - The days of soggy, smudged survey sheets are over. It’s time to unleash the power of the web to unlock the power of people to monitor their forests! I would be happy to come along and talk about this project if you feel its relevant

Hi - not as yet as simple and small data sets easy to analyse and feed results into local comunity, regional governement reports to influence policy and forest management.

But we have a second phase where we are looking to build a central portal for community projects around the world to bring data onto a central platform and possibly ncorporate that with global biodiveristy and climate change data sets to enhance community understanding of their data and give scientists/internationl NGOs the ability to access and incorporate community data in global modelling or ground truthing of satelite data for example.

I can speak about our exploration of using VARx and Bayesian regression for Market Mix Modelling. It is probably not cutting edge but showcases how statistics are used in the business world. It might even inspire some discussion.
