Kung-Fu Pandas 101 - Valentine's Day Edition

  • Feb 13, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

For Valentine's Day we thought it would be fun to explore some data about relationships and singles from Facebook. Do girls or guys have more single friends on Facebook?  Do single people have more single friends? Are people from Toronto different than people from other places in terms of how many single friends they have?  The sample dataset we'll be using was generously provided by our friends at Vouch who are connecting you to all the cute singles your friends know.  Check them out at joinvouch.com.

MEET BRANDON KANE: Brandon is the CTO and Co-Founder of Vantage Analytics. He has been working in software and technology for over 10 years, and has spent the last 5 in predictive analytics software.

DATA: A live-coding session where you will learn the basics of working with data using Pandas.  This event is for developers and statisticians who want a better way to work with data than SAS, R, or SQL.  A basic working knowledge of Python is REQUIRED.  Python is easy to get started with, so if you haven't worked with it before, you should be able to pick it up before the meetup: http://www.python.org/about/gettingstarted/

AGENDA

Pro-Talk [30 min]: Brandon will walk through some of the core Pandas concepts, terminology and tips/tricks.  He will also demonstrate how Vantage has used Pandas and other tools to build their product.

Live Coding Tutorial [90 min]: As a group, we will explore the Facebook data, looking at things like:

1. Recoding numeric data.

2. Summarizing and cross-tabulating data.

REQUIREMENTS

Please follow the setup instructions at: https://github.com/VantageAnalytics/datavizTO/ BEFORE the meetup.  There is limited time in advance of the session to deal with individual install issues so please ensure you are set up a few days before the meetup.  If you run into trouble, post in the meetup comments and we'll do our best to help you out.

Hi all - the slides, and ipython notebooks (as well as straight .py files) have been added to the github repo. The screencast came out pretty well also - we started it early though. Jump 10 minutes in to where it actually starts.

That was a very entertaining session, thanks for putting it together, Brandon!

Really sorry, but I have cancel at last minute as well.

Sorry, have to drop out last minute - got a kid under the weather. Will try to catch the live stream - Pandas looks really kool. Past meetups with this group have been fantastic.

We will be live streaming the meetup in a Google Hangout at http://bit.ly/dvto5 with Q/A enabled. If you just want to listen in or don't want to sign up for Google+, you can watch the live stream on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvIIWwi9i2A

Is it possible to stream the live coding session?

    2 · February 11, 2014

    • Faisal A.

Thanks for the reply Dan. If its too difficult to share the live coding session, it would suffice just to have a PowerPoint about the pandas exercises that will be done. Cheers

We will be posting the slides as well as the code from the exercises after the meetup.

Is knowledge of Pandas prerequisite ?

    February 12, 2014

    • Brandon K.

Nope - we'll be starting from the basics assuming very little knowledge of Pandas. Some working knowledge of Python is required though.

Not going to attend tomorrow as I (still) don't have my laptop back from the Apple store. Damn shame too I was really looking forward to it. Hopefully someone grabs my spot who can participate in the live coding! Enjoy all!

I would love to be there but I can't make it on Thursday, is there anyway we can record this session?

    February 11, 2014

    • Dan H.

Hi Rose, we'll look into using a webex-style tool to stream the event. We'll send an update with the details if available.

Is it possible to move to a larger venue?

    1 · February 8, 2014

    • Dan H.

Hi Brian, it's too late to switch venues for this meetup, but we'll consider larger venues for popular topics in the future. Thanks -dan
