Update 1/7/14 6:08 PM
You all are amazing! Ten volunteers in just about ten minutes. Thanks so much for stepping up to help out! We're now at capacity for tomorrow, but we'll have plenty more volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Keep watching Meetup, and sign up on our site: www.datakind.org/getinvolved to be alerted when long-term DataCorps projects are starting up, or when we set a data for our next weekend DataDive.
We will be announcing one more volunteer opportunity at our next Meetup on 1/14. Hope to see you there!
Here's the deal-- if you've got 30 minutes for a Google Hangout orientation and another 30 to volunteer, you can make a world of difference for GiveDirectly, who's working to eradicate poverty with the help of our DataCorps team.
We need ten volunteers, first come first serve. All skill levels welcome!
For the past few months DataKind volunteers have been working with Give Directly- an organization that gives direct cash transfers to people living in poverty in Kenya and Uganda. GiveDirectly wants to find the villages and households most in need of cash assistance with a more scientific and accurate method, using satellite map imagery.
Our DataKind team has written algorithms to classify roof-types in satellite images but they need more pre-labeled training data to improve their performance before putting it to work helping people.
We need your help to generate that data! All you have to do is examine images of Kenyan and Ugandan villages and identify which roofs in a given image are iron and which are thatched.
Quick recap on how you can make a difference:
Commitment: 1 hour max
Location: 30 min Google Hangout (link TBD) and 30 min where ever you and your laptop may be.
Impact on the non-profit: High!
