Project Accelerator Night: World Toilet Organisation, Riverkids and Care Corner

Details
Our Project Accelerator Night (PAN) will bring together experts with data science and analytical backgrounds to help non-profit organizations take the first steps to a successful data science project.
To ensure that our discussions are productive, we have to limit the number of people that can attend this PAN. Unfortunately, that means that not everyone who wishes to attend will be able to. Please do think about the RSVP questions and how you will be able to contribute to the discussions. Sign up if you’re ready to be an active participant!
For this event, we will be featuring the World Toilet Organization (WTO), Riverkids and Care Corner.
Agenda
6.45 - 7.10pm: Registration and check-in (food and drinks will be provided)
7.10 - 7.30pm: Introduction to our featured non-profit organizations
7.30 - 7.40pm: Presentation on common data modeling issues faced by small organizations.
7.40 - 8.40pm: Break-out for group discussions
8.40- 9pm: Reconvene to share learnings, and see how this can be brought forward
Special thanks to ThoughtWorks (http://www.thoughtworks.com/) for being our venue and food sponsor!
Representative Questions
WTO: What analysis can be done on their available data? What gaps are there in the data? What kind of survey can be conducted on their beneficiaries?
Riverkids: What is the best way for Riverkids to consider data that changes on an irregular basis? What can be done about some of their issues like non-unique spelling of names? What analysis can be done on their existing data?
Care Corner: What data should a volunteers’ database include? How should it be structured? Is there a better way to track volunteer hours than manual sign in sheets?
How it works
Each non-profit organization will have its own breakout group of interested volunteers and a facilitator to spend the evening brainstorming, conversing and discussing ideas to help the organization get ready to embark on a data project. There will not be any data or coding.
General discussion topics
• What is your organization's goal? What does the world look like when you succeed?
• What is the biggest problem you're facing?
• What does your data look like (specific questions as needed)?
• What types of questions can you answer with the data you have?
• What problems do you have with your current data?
• Where can you find or how can you better collect the data you need?
• What do you think you can takeaway from this discussion, and what will be a good next step?
