Open data ideas with OpenData ASEAN

Details

We are doing a different kind of meetup this time round to focus on open data ideas for social impact analysis. Do come prepared with an idea (see pitching guidelines below) or come ready to join a team to work on open data. We will work together with successfully formed teams to develop their data analysis ideas, and match with non-profit organizations which can benefit from this analysis!

Schedule

6.45 - 7pm: Registration (no food/drinks will be served, so do grab a bite beforehand)

7 - 7.45pm: Mishari Muqbil of OpenData ASEAN (https://www.facebook.com/groups/OpenDataASEAN/) will be presenting on open data initiatives, followed by Q&A

7.45 - 8.15pm: Come forward to pitch your open data ideas (2 min each)

8.15 - 8.45pm: Form teams to work on different open data ideas

8.45 - 9pm: Register your teams with DataKind SG, and arrange follow-ups for teams to work on successful open data ideas!

What ideas are we looking for?

Here are some guidelines:

• Is it a DataKind focus area? Poverty, Health, Environment, Education, Human Rights, Urban issues.

• How much impact? Hint: bigger is better…

• Can it be measured?

• Is there an organization or government that can carry it further - think promotion, human resources, scaling up, etc.

• Is the idea paradigm shifting (a faster horse versus a car)

• What is the probability of success?

• What is the likelihood for the analysis to yield meaningful results?

• What is the likelihood for the organization to carry out the action?

• What is the likelihood for action to lead to a positive impact?

Formulate an impact statement for your pitch

We are looking for impactful ideas! Try to formulate an impact statement for your pitch in the following format:

Use [an open data set] in order to [type of analysis] so that
[an organization] can [an organizational action] that leads to [an impact on issue]

E.g. DC Action for Children:

Use [child wellbeing data] in order to [create a map-based visualization] so that [DC Action for Children] can [make findings accessible to policymakers] that leads to [policy improvements in child well-being in DC]

Pitching guidelines

• Identify the social impact area you want to analyze, and possible beneficiary non-profit organizations (see "What ideas are we looking for?" above)

• Look for open data sets as well as existing data research/analysis, in the identified social impact area

• Think of what you hope to analyze/mash up, and what kind of skills you might need in your team to do this e.g. web scrapping, machine learning

• Condense your idea to a 2 minute pitch including an impact statement (see "Formulate an impact statement for your pitch" above), and you're all set!
