The Second DataViz London Meetup

Details
We are very excited to announce the second instalment of DataViz London.
A great line-up of speakers for three special talks related to data visualisation you won’t want to miss!
(Talks will start a little after 7pm, but feel free to arrive early as we'll be having pizza and drinks!)
Talk 1: Drawing science (…and data), Nigel Hawtin (https://twitter.com/nigelhawtin)
Nigel will talk about his own personal history and will run through a couple of recent work examples going from the brief to the final visuals, showing how sketching is an important step in designing any data visualisation.
Nigel Hawtin is a medical and botanical illustrator, who went on to be Graphics Editor at New Scientist for many years. He now runs his own business as an information designer/journalist.
Talk 2. Visualizing accidents in London using TFL data, Lucia Kocincova (https://twitter.com/_lucyia) & Calum Hale (https://twitter.com/calumhale)
Calum and Lucia will walk you through design and technical challenges they went through while creating interactive visualisation of London traffic accidents using TFL open data.
Lucia Kocincova is a London-based developer focusing on creating engaging visualisations at QuantumBlack where she blends front-end and data visualizations. Calum Hale is a graphic and information designer working in both print and digital to create data visualisations, applications and design material for QuantumBlack’s London office.
Talk 3: In between exploring and explaining, Valentina D’Efilippo (https://twitter.com/defilippovale)
When we talk about why we visualise data, it can be helpful to think about dataviz as a tool with two main purposes: exploration and explanation. In her talk, Valentina will pose that although the two have slightly different aims — the extraction of insight versus the communication of a specific message — is it optimal to consider the two approaches separately? Or should we as practitioners strive to better blend the two to harness their strengths?
Valentina is a London-based Information designer and the co-author of the award-winning book The Infographic History of the World, Valentina's practice pursues imaginative and compelling visual outcomes, often aiming to visualise data and distill complexity.
