I have been HOH all my life, but went to a mainstream school. I had some challenges, but it was usually fine just having me sit in the very front row. I was never picked on with my hearing in school until my junior year of high school.
late deaf - went deaf age 18 1 week before 1st week of college
no. My family has not been good about learning ASL.
I learned to finger spell in the 3rd grade and always wanted to learn more, I really wish I had learned before going deaf!

Love this group. I've been coming every month since July 2010 and really enjoy it. I'm deaf, but late deaf and have had a really hard time learning sign. I was VERY overwhelmed the first meetup. I had really high expectations of what the group would be like before I came was was let down and frustrated, but the next meetup, I decided to go even though I was overwhelmed before. I talked to Linden, the group organizer, and she gave me some advice, such as just picking 1 or 2 people and trying to have a conversation with them and not focus on the whole group and it has really helped. My signing has really improved since joining the group and everyone in the group I've talked to has been really patient with me and finger spelling when I don't know a word.
